AN EXPERIENCE

Have seen the movie. Was curious to see how the effects would be reproduced on stage. The play was superlative both in performance as well as effects. One simple but glaring mistake. When Pi’s family is shown doing a Pooja they continue to wear shoes. Hindus NEVER pray with shoes on.

PI LEAVES ME WONDERING

Left at intermission. This should be storytelling at its best. Yet, the story is lost in a lot of yelling and screaming. The effects are spectacular in the first 15 minutes. Not much after that. I couldn’t understand or hear the actors and while the puppets are beautiful (and we’re expected to ignore the operators) maybe it could have been staged so the operators are not blocking the puppets 50% of the time. I was sitting first row center mezz and was bored after 20 minutes. Mostly because the actors didn’t enunciate or project. I couldn’t tell you why this boy had animals on a boat in a storm, but they all looked good. Maybe focus on getting the story out first, then wow us with the technical. I really wanted to like this.
