GREAT NIGHT AT THE THEATER

Just saw Ghost at the Pantages as part of my annual subscription. I certainly found it to be one of the most entertaining shows I can remember recently with talented cast and creative staging. Reading some of the old reviews from the NY production and, presumably the earlier cities in this tour, I can only imagine that some of these so called "professional" critics did not see the same production as I did tonight, or they are jaded by the nostalgia of the movie and refused to open their eyes to enjoy the experience of a new and vibrant cast and stage presentation of a classic story.

GOOD BUT REALLY LOUD

Yes, worth seeing. Seats good. Would not take children without noise-protection. Take Mother. Didn't eat nearby this time but there are lots of good choices. Inventive and interesting use of technology and special affects. The second act was much tighter and better put together than the first. The singing was over-miked so that words were really distorted. When the volume was turned down, it was effective and there wasn't a sound in the audience. So the contrast was effective. The Pantages is a magnificent theatre and has a lovely bar with a great alcohol selection but rather than wanting to be there and schmooze a bit, the volume of the techno-beat music there drove us out. You've got to want a drink really bad to stop in. Many left before the curtain call and I thought maybe they'd never been to a play before but decided it was just people trying to get a leg up on getting out of the parking lot.

JUST OK FOR $26 TICKET

This musical was just OK. The songs were not memorable, except for 1 or 2 from end of the first act. The actors gave stale/generic performances. Carla R. Stewart and the 2 ladies' performance as Oda Mae and her "sistas" were hilarious! However, a lot of their material was too similar from the movie. The villain wasn't as mischievous as Tony Gold's portrayal in the movie. I really can't say it was that good because the acting in this national tour seems kinda off. There was a whole lot of dancing just to fill in the space on stage instead of having a purpose. I'd have to say the special effects were excellent. The orchestrations for some of the songs included some type of electronic vibe which was interesting to hear. The use of "Unchained Melody" was interesting too. But I definitely did not like it when Sam screamed it almost like a rock vibe in one part of the musical. Like I said, "Ghost the Musical" is just ok. I would've rather seen the movie again. Can't beat $26!

BETTER LEADS NEEDED

I've never been to a musical where I only enjoyed one or two songs. The songs weren't great and the lead actors were weak. A lot of the choreography made no sense with the music or story line. I enjoyed Oda Mae's character, her sisters, and the subway ghost. The special effects were very good.

SAVE YOUR MONEY ON THIS ONE...

While the special effects, and the woman who played Oda Mae (and her two sidekicks) were terrific, I found this production hokey, and not up to par with the rest of the shows I've seen at The Pantages. The cast was not great (the lead woman had a hard time staying on pitch), the book and lyrics seemed uninspired, and the music was not all that memorable either.
