A Fascinating Play Lacks Emotional Core

3/5

Now in previews, one hopes the performances will improve, but you can't teach enough acting with less than 3 weeks to opening. Okay, that's a little harsh, because there are many bright moments to the piece - from the stage craft to the incomparable writing - but none when Jason Biggs is on stage. He has a tremendously likable personality but lacks the chops to create the depth of his character 'Scoop," leaving us with a cardboard performance that sucked the air out of his scenes. The overall farcical tone and broad acting seemed highly inappropriate, and left me feeling as UNmoved as when watching the ill-conceived 'Mothers and Sons' last year. Elizabeth Moss in the title role of "Heidi" is much more grounded in story and character and almost seems to be in a different play. Tracee Chimo is always a delight: I would pay to watch her read a menu. I don't know if the director can save this play before opening, but I hope she makes an effort.
