The Confession of Lily Dare
This production is a good example how vital how the material, characters and a bona fide antagonist needs to mesh together to create tension, drama, and laughs-- in this case it doesn't quite work out that way. Oh sure there's a few funny lines. A few over the top costumes but costumes aren't a replacement to truly funny material. A line or two doesn't cut it either. It's amusing (in places) but not really funny. Also, it suffers from being spread across too wide span of time. You no sooner start and then they're starting over again - so the piece doesn't really get going. It kinda works but not as it should or could. We missed the legendary actress Julie Halston in this production. Maybe she would have helped bump up the comedy. In short, it's a fairly straight play with some drag, some funny lines but not a whole lot else (unlike his previous works).
