Left the theater smiling and humming
It felt fresh and original, with great lyrics, music that can be remembered, and a staging that keeps getting better as the show progresses. A great theater experience.
Not bad but not good either
Saw a matinee performance of a new musical SCOTLAND PA at the Roundabout. If musicals can be successful with good voices, a sincere effort to sell the show with a mediocre book and music, there would be many successes. Alas, it isn't easy and you need more...much more. Set in the 70s, in a nowhere nothing town, a couple toil away in a burger joint along with some other misfits. The tightwad owner with no vision is happy screwing his employees and keeping the status quo. With a very small ode to Macbeth, the wife of the couple encourages him to mayhem and murder. They take over the joint and make it a success but sell their souls in the process. Doing a campy show is a fine art and here it's slapdash and uneven. While there are a few select moments, the overall effort comes up short like the proverbial needle in a haystack.
