Theater of the Absurd meets Noises Off
Just in case people don't understand. Absurd plays don't make sense. That's the point. So don't impose ideas of rationalism to this play; just enjoy the ride. Fast acting, fast talking, fast moving. The play is not great, but the performances are. I thought it was fun.
What happened?
How could the playwright of "Six Degrees of Separation" fall so low? "Nantucket Sleighride" is centered on a once-successful playwright who is blocked and unable to write. The arrival of two people from his past sends him down a memory-hole to the summer of 1975 and a series of outlandish events on the titular island where everybody--everybody!--once had a role in a local amateur production of his previous play and now has an urgent grudge against him. From this slapstick chaos and a weird conspiracy (not worth describing) he gets the germ of an idea for a new play--and announces at the end that "This is the play I wrote." Oh, what a cheap, sad trick.
