great actor, terrible material
No dispute that John Lithgow is an accomplished actor, otherwise I would have given it a poorer score. This one man show was awful. The set consisted of a wood paneled "room" with a chair, a stool, a desk, a book, and a glass of water (for him to drink in case his mouth got dry, not a prop). Long story short, even John Lithgow could not breathe life into the dry and uninteresting material he presented. I nodded off several times. The intermission provided a respite, albeit temporary for me. A few people seated near me did not return from intermission. About the best thing I could say was that we had good seats to this uninteresting show. Save your money!
Stories by Heart was so awful I was flabbergasted!
Lithgow may well be one of the great American actors . And as such his celebrity would allow him to do just about anything he chose to do. That he chose this material is simply flabbergasting. The story in the first act was a tale in such bad taste i still cannot fathom what was Lithgow thinking to enact this material. A philandering drunk tormenting his family and an innocent girl he tried to rape then publicly humiliated in revenge because she rebuffed him - as if it were humorous???? The second act story was impossible to follow as Lithgo in a heavy accent switching nothing more than his voice to play 5 characters??? I have absolutely no idea what he was talking about over the course of the second hour. II am a native New Yorker and avid theatre goer. Going to a couple of plays a week seen several hundred plays and this is the worst play in memory.
