What could be better than seeing Cher? Seeing Cher in three variations interacting with herself comes very close! New musical The Cher Show looks at the music icon's life from her past, present and future selves. An effective way to cram in a lot of life into a short space of time! We see the transformation from the young introverted sixteen-year-old Cher (played by Michaela Diamond) who shot to worldwide fame with Sonny Bono (played by Jarrod Spector) for their song "I Got You Babe", to the young mother (Teal Wicks) who had to rebuild her career after the golden years of the TV hit, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, to the goddess warrior we know today (Stephanie J. Block). The three deliver extraordinary performances.
The Book by Rick Elice weaves the lyrics of the legendary songs with the intimate moments of Cher's life. Elice worked on this production with producers Jeffrey Seller, Flody Suarez, director Jason Moore, and of course, Cher herself who is also a producer. The music is legendary but getting the right team on board is crucial for any new musical's execution and Stephanie J. Block delivers a super-star performance, earning her a Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role. This is a strong ensemble, a big-budget show and a talented group across the board. Christopher Gattelli's choreography is brilliant and outrageous, and his numbers showcase Cher's tenacity, resilience and wit.
Bob Mackie is the costume designer for the show and there is no doubt that Mackie's outfits are a huge part of Cher's branding, creating a true fashion icon. The show pays homage to his spectacular talents with a mini fashion show highlighting some of his famous outfits worn by the mischievous star. For many in the audience, this seemed to be the best part of the show! Mackie is also represented in the show and played by Michael Berresse.
The Cher Show is a love letter to the goddess of pop and fans will appreciate this trip down memory lane. As people swayed, clapped and danced along it was evident that Cher's presence is "Strong Enough" and "The Beat Goes On". Be sure to get your tickets before its closing on August 18.
