The musical places a greater emphasis on broad comedy than other Disney stage productions, keeping the audience happily dazed with laughter and distraction from the familiar storyline mechanics. For example, the Genie and his antics have enough energy to light up Times Square, and Iago (a conniving parrot sidekick in the movie, now embodied as a short and stout human), is a masterclass of comedic timing.
There's some serious stage magic going on. It's like Disneyland, but even better! One standout moment of the show is the stunning magic carpet scene, where the carpet appears to glide effortlessly across the stage, leaving the audience wondering how such a feat is even possible.
Aladdin refreshingly celebrates cultures from around the world. It incorporates inventive elements such as interpolating songs from other Disney movies and alluding to diverse cultural references. The wise-cracking one-liners and general vibe of the show are often Arabian-themed and wholeheartedly stick to their roots.
You better stretch those legs because Aladdin's dance numbers are spectacular! Casey Nicholaw's choreography adds another layer of excitement and spectacle to the musical, with extravagant dance numbers paying tribute to various styles and eras, from the Cotton Club to Bollywood.
You'll laugh with them, cry with them, and root for them every step of the way. Princess Jasmine in particular is depicted as a strong and independent character who stands up for her right to make her own choices. It's the characters we love, only this time, we get to know them that little bit more!
