Review round up: The Thanksgiving Play and Peter Pan Goes Wrong

Two farcical plays about well-meaning groups putting on plays opened this week on Broadway - did they make it to curtain up?

Broadway loves a show about putting on a show and this week they were spoiled for choice as Larissa FastHorse's Thanksgiving Play and Mischief Theatre's Peter Pan Goes Wrong had their opening nights at the Hayes Theatre and the Ethel Barrymore Theater respectively. Read on to see how they did with the critics!

The Thanksgiving Play

Written by Larissa FastHorse, this highly anticipated Broadway run of her play about a group of well-meaning liberals trying to accommodate everyone at a Thanksgiving Pagent is billed as a whirlwind of satire and political comedy. The critics certainly had an appetite for it, with Time Out New York enjoying the layered work:

"In a swift 90 minutes, The Thanksgiving Play delivers solid laughs at the expense of targets that are admittedly, at this point, not unfamiliar: clueless liberals so busy holding space that they don't get around to filling it with anything. What the play doesn't do is provide much sense of a better solution to the questions that its hapless theater folks are stultified by. This absence leaves you with a question, at the end, that is double-edged: Where the representation of identity and history are concerned, is nothing good enough?"

While the Wall Street Journal summed up what most other critics said:

"The superb cast, and those diverting videos, keep the play humming along. But a feeling of satiation sets in. For all its knife-sharp humor, the play might be compared to a delicious Thanksgiving meal that nevertheless makes you feel a bit overstuffed, and slightly tired of your family, too.

Average 3.5/5

On to Peter Pan Goes Wrong next, another zany slapstick farce from Mischief Theatre, the folks behind The Play That Goes Wrong. A blend of comedy and action, Peter Pan sees the same doomed theatre company from 'Goes Wrong attempt to put on a Great British Pantomime - was mischief managed?

Safe to say reviews skewed more towards the positive than The Thanksgiving Play, with Variety echoing many of the critics

"The cast of "Peter Pan Goes Wrong" is exquisite, and exceptional when it comes to making the dangerous aspects of mayhem and mistakes look accidental."

New York Daily News reminds us of an upcoming star turn and promotes the family nature of the show

"Even without Neil Patrick Harris the star turn massively juicing up ticket sales for a few weeks "Peter Pan Goes Wrong" will be a great night out for a family audience. The politically incorrect show is a total blast and one of the very few Broadway attractions where kids are encouraged to clap, boo and talk back to the annoying actors."
