Did the critics go wild for Life of Pi?

What did the New York critics think of the Broadway transfer of this innovative, Olivier-winning production?

The magical novel from Yann Martel comes to life in this breathtaking production from Lolita Chakrabarti, directed by Max Webster, opening at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater on March 30. Featuring first-class puppetry, and epic special effects, did this tale of endurance win over the critics?

The New York Times certainly enjoyed it:

"A Boy and A Tiger Burning Bright...With dazzling imagination and sublime control, the show's cast and crew conjure a delirious, dynamic, highly pettable world. And oh, is it a wonder. Though the play is ostensibly about one boy's fraught survival after a disaster, that story is somewhat thin. "Life of Pi" instead succeeds as a broader tribute to human ingenuity and animal grace"

The Wall Street Journal issued a similar sentiment:

"But, echoing the miraculous survival of the central character, nicknamed Pi, played by the astounding young actor Hiran Abeysekera, the imaginative stage rendering of the book, adapted by Lolita Chakrabarti and directed by Max Webster, delivers a mostly exhilarating evening of theater, against those mighty odds."

and finally, Entertainment Weekly summed up the show's awards chances:

"Adaptations of Life of Pi have won everything from Oscars to the Booker Prize to Olivier Awards, and there is no doubt with this dazzling Broadway production that Tony Awards are sure to follow."

With overall positive to neutral reviews, it looks like Life of Pi is a certified hit. What did you think? Leave us a review on our showpage.
