The award-winning drama heads off-Broadway
The Girls Of Summer takes us back to 1945-era Chicago, a group of African American women are assembled to play an exhibition game against the all-white reigning champions Rockford Peaches. And if you thought they sounded familiar, you'd be right - the Peaches were the central focus of A League Of Their Own. Now a new set of heroines take to their field with their own struggles facing racism, sexism and deceit. Follow their journey as they are led by their grimly determined coach, the first woman to play in the Negro Leagues.
Winner of the 2006 NAACP Award for Best Play, Layon Gay's drama was inspired by the Gina Davis movie "A League Of Their Own", whereby a black woman threw a ball back to the white character. Wondering if black women played baseball against white competitors, Gay's research turned some some surprising and inspiring stories.
