A CHRISTMAS CAROL AT MCCARTER

This was my first time seeing A Christmas Carol at McCarter. It felt very understated to me. I expected something more lively. I did not care for the portrayal of Mr. Scrooge. The character needed to be more intense and gruff. The singing was good and the children performed beautifully. If you like theater, it's worth seeing. Just don't expect a true Christmas feel from this production.

CHRISTMAS CAROL 2022

I have seen and highly looked forward to this play in the beautiful Mc Carter Theater. It’s the annual highlight of our Christmas celebration! This production however was off. Besides Scrooge being played by a small woman , the play lacked its usual colorful characters. It lost the charm we all have come to love. It felt watered down , not the Dickens spirit in this one. Hopefully next year will see a return to the play we all love so much!

A CHRISTMAS CAROL IN PRINCETON MCCARTER THEATER

Saw this show several years back at the McCarter Theater. It was magical and entertaining. I was excepting the same experience. Went to the Revised A Christmas Carol adapted and directed by Lauren Keating. It was a disappointment. The show lacked the Charles Dickens feel. The stage seemed blah and overall boring. I really hope they have someone new direct the play next year.

CHRISTMAS MAGIC...GONE

This is the second time I have seen A Christmas Carol at Mccarter Theater. The last time was in 2019 and the vast difference between the two shows is horribly apparent. In 2019 carolers met you in the refreshment area to get you in the spirit prior to the show. That didn't exist this year and that really set my mood for the remainder of the night. The actors were not great. The accents were all over the place and made the setting of London not believable. I'm sorry, but while I thought the actor herself playing scrooge was good, Scrooge is simply not a woman. She wasn't as rude or as gruff as the character is supposed to be, either. Most of the actors were hard to understand at times or hard to hear. The beginning of the show starts with Ebeneezer being rude to his nephew and never sets the stage for the Kratchet storyline. The show itself felt rushed and you never have a chance to fall in love with the characters. It was far too modernized. There is more, but I am out of characters.

MCCARTER 2022 CHRISTMAS CAROL

Sadly, this was a thoroughly disappointing performance that lacked any of the warmth, talent and impact of past performances at McCarter. The actors seemed rushed and disinterested and casting Scrooge as a woman went so far beyond Dickens as to detract from the show. Props did not work (the appearance of Marley's face in the door knocker) and the thought that if the actor playing Scrooge simply said "Bah Humbug" enough times, there would be character development all left us befuddled. It was difficult to understand or hear the actors. Altogether, a poor performance by a cast seemingly just interested in getting it over with.

REALLY SAD TO SAY

I’ve probably seen this 10 or 15 times in Princeton, and the first 10 to 12 times it almost left me in tears it was so moving. They change the scenery and some of them dialogue in an unfavorable way to three years ago, and I stopped going. I went again this year, and it got even worse. Many of the best things about the production and almost let me in tears were gone - knocker, angels, tombstone, amazing beautiful dance scene, ending scene ..etc. sadly, it felt a bit like McCarthy was trying to save money on the cast in the production. Finally, Scrooge is a fairly tepid. Woman is not a good fit for Scrooge sorry to say.

CHRISTMAS CAROL REVIEW

This year’s rendition was no where near as good as previous years. Please bring back the show we all know and love!
