Malala Yousafzai is one such shining light. Born in 1997, the determined young social activist began speaking publicly about education rights in her native Pakistan in 2008 and started a blog for BBC Urdu that detailed her life under Taliban occupation in 2009. Rising in prominence, this led to a shocking assassination attempt at the hands of her oppressors in 2012.
