New York Philharmonic lend their esteemed talents to Musorgsky's famed gallery jaunt, Pictures at at an Exhibition, his 1874 piano suite based on the paintings of his friend Victor Hartmann. From the quiet of a ballet lesson, a trek through the Paris catacombs to the glory of Kiev's monumental arch celebrating Tsar Alexander II, it's a mixed bag of emotion and poetry that'll delight and thrill in equal measures.
First created for piano, the version we're familiar with today is due to the genius of Ravel and his wonderful orchestration.
