Why See Theatre of Nations: Miss Julie?

Strindberg's Controversial Masterpiece

Strindberg's provocative Miss Julie comes to the New York City Center as part of the Lincoln Center Festival. Tracing the tempestuous romance between a count's daughter and a manservant, the play's daring subject matter originally proved too much for many European censors in the 1800s and it was banned in many countries. It's now considered the Swedish playwright's finest achievement and was most recently adapted for the silver screen in a version starring Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell.

Helmed by renowned German director Thomas Ostermeier, this brand new adaptation transfers events to present-day Russia, and stars Evgeny Mironov and Chulpan Khamatova. This production played to rapturous notice in Russia and proves that Miss Julie's subversive nature has lost none of its power.
