Returning off-Broadway for a limited run
Attorney and playwright Norman Shabel returns with his thrilling new courtroom drama following its world premiere in March at the Playroom Theatre. Directed by Christopher Scott, A Class Act plays a limited run at New World Stages and provides a disturbing and timely exploration of legal America doing battle against big business, drawing on his own past experiences and news alike. While seven cut-throat lawyers on both sides of a class action suit duke it out in a closed courtroom, we are forced to ask ourselves; who are the real winners here?
America is infamous for its litigious nature, and this comes to the fore in Shabel's work, where a team of bulldog lawyers take on a mighty petrochemical company, accused of poisoning water supplies and causing illness in the most vulnerable of society. However, this important fact seems to elude those battling it out within the cloistered surroundings of the court; as petty point-scoring and legal challenges mount up, it becomes apparent that those at the root of the action will never see justice.
