A new work by the Vagina Monologue
Based on her latest acclaimed memoir of the same name, the Tony Award-winning feminist author of The Vagina Monologues returns with a new play in January 2018, produced by the esteemed Manhattan Theatre Club. Helmed by Tony Award winning director Diane Paulus, Eve Ensler's new work takes us into her time in war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo, working with women suffering from rape. However, Ensler was shocked to learn that she was suffering from uterine cancer, causing her to rethink her priorities, as well as considering how closely linked her body was to the earth, in terms of environmental crises.
A leading light in feminist literature
Recognized by Newsweek as one of the 150 Women Who Changed the World, Ensler's internationally acclaimed Vagina Monologues has been translated into 48 languages and performed in over 140 countries, winning an Obie Award in the process and spawning a 2002 movie of the same name. A prolific writer, she has also created other plays including Floating Rhoda and the Glue Man, Extraordinary Measures, Necessary Targets, OPC, The Good Body, and Emotional Creature; in March 2016 she took her work Fruit Trilogy to the UK as one of the keynote guests at London's Women of the World Festival. As a campaigner for women's rights and the end of violence against women on a global scale, her work often crosses artistic genres with her documentary short, One Billion Rising also spawning the international movement.
A Tony-winning director
Diane Paulus' heady back catalog of work runs the entire gamut between plays, musicals and even opea, having helmed Tony-winning hits Pippin, Gershwin's Porgy And Bess and Hair. Her other works include Witness Uganda, Pippin, Prometheus Bound, Death and the Powers: The Robots' Opera, Best of Both Worlds, Johnny Baseball and The Donkey Show.
