Power Play
Following the incredible success of Hand to God, Robert Askins returns to the Manhattan Theatre Club with his new comedy Permission, which takes a similarly sideways glance at religion in the 21st Century. After playing MTC, his demonic hand puppet piece Hand to God transferred to Broadway's Booth Theatre, where it's still currently enjoying an open run.
Permission revolves around the controversial practise of Christian Domestic Discipline, a real life method of maintaining a healthy relationship by way of corporal punishment, practised by a small subculture of American believers. Eric and Cyndy are a staid married couple who decide to give it a shot, but discover that the lifestyle's commitment to old fashioned gender roles forces them to examine some uncomfortable truths about their union. This world premiere production is directed by the Tony-nominated Alex Timbers (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson).
