A Piece of New York History
Written by Justin Rivers, The Eternal Space is a new two-man play set around New York's old Penn State Station. Copiously researched, utilising freshly unearthed photographic archives of the building, this piece is at once a love letter to a lost New York landmark and an exploration of the worth we place in our city's heritage.
The play is set in 1963, as the demolition of Penn State Station was just beginning. A veritable marvel of early 1900s design, the cost of the station's upkeep had nonetheless become to much for the city to bear. Amidst the bulldozers and wrecking balls, one of the sites' construction workers strikes up a conversation with an old English teacher, who is mourning the building's passing. It's a chance encounter which becomes a three year conversation, with the pair debating the importance of history, as well as working through their own personal demons.
