The classic Gershwin musical returns to New York
As part of Theatre Row's Musicals Tonight series, The Lion Theatre presents a new production of the famed Gershwin musical Funny Face. Having received an Obie Award for its 2004 revival, this charming classic musical premiered in 1927 starring Fred Astaire and his sister, Adele. With bumbling burglars, three determined sisters and an over-protective older brother, a merry chase across the tri-state area ensues. Helmed by Casey Colgan, Funny Face is a charming journey to the past, with laughs and music along the way.
Meet Jimmy Reeve. As the legal guardian of three younger but vivacious sisters Dora, June and Frankie, he tries to do his best to keep them out of trouble, so that they each may make a good marriage. This means that he keeps each of their prized belongings in his safe, including June's pearl necklace and Frankie's incriminating diary - which she is desperate to get back before her brother reads it. Convincing her paramour Peter to steal it from the safe, he instead grabs the pearls, which ensues in a panicked trio of sisters chasing him all the way to Atlantic City! And to make things worse, a sub-plot involving two burglars, who were in fact after the pearls join the chase and the chaotic story! Will the sisters get their possessions back in time before Jimmy notices?
