Obie and Lifetime Achievement Award-winning American playwright Charles Mee's thought-provoking and wildly imaginative work The Glory of the World is a fond examination of the multi-faceted mystic and Trappist monk Thomas Merton, a man who led a life more colorful than a kaleidoscope. This poignant and high-energy production explores the realms of his philosophies which encompass social interaction, solitude, happiness and spirituality, culminating in the glorious messiness of human existence, with all its glorious contradictions.
A man of many talents and vocations, Thomas Merton was a successful poet, ordained priest, social activist and one of the most successful Catholic writers and thinkers of the 20th century. One could call him a rock star theologian whose intellectual pursuits partly influenced the spiritual revolution in the 1960s. Of course this means he ruffled a few feathers... But those who march to the beat of their own drum often do! Mee's production will give you a glimpse of this extraordinary, yet flawed human being.
