Absence can make the heart grow fonder, but in this case, music diminished time and absence and made the past feel revived and less remote.
Neutral Milk Hotel may not have been the most proficient of bands, but their lasting legacy has been massive. Their debut On Avery Island and especially its follow up, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea have been hugely influential records on the current crop of rock bands, with everyone from Franz Ferdinand to Arcade Fire hailing their importance.
Lead singer Jeff Mangum is a famously reclusive figure so the likelihood of a Neutral Milk Hotel reunion didn't seem too likely, but last year, 14 years after their break-up, it happened. Thankfully the band's catalogue of alternately woozy psychedelia and stripped back troubadour folk sounded as glorious as ever. Due to enormous demand, the tour continued into 2014, with countless new dates added.
