A scented love story
Roundabout Theatre mark their 50th Anniversary season with a brand new Broadway revival production of She Loves Me. The musical holds a special place in Roundabout's history - their ten-time Tony nominated revival of the show in 1993 was the company's first Broadway Musical. This new production nearly matched that record this year, picking up eight Tony nominations, winning one.
What is it about?
Director Scott Ellis (The Elephant Man) will helm the show once again, while Zachary Levi (Chuck) and Tony winners Laura Benanti (Gypsy) and Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) will play the leads. The story revolves around a pair of constantly bickering parfumerie clerks, who are unaware that each is the others romantic pen pal.
Set in Hungary, the original play was written by Miklos Laszlo and has seen three major adaptations including the musical production and the 1940 film The Shop Around the Corner starring James Stewart and the 1949 Judy Garland-Van Johnson musical In the Good Old Summertime. In 1998 the story resurfaced once again in the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan vehicle, You've Got Mail, replacing old fashioned letters with emails.
A hugely talented cast
While he's best known to television audiences as the eponymous hero of NBC's action comedy Chuck, this won't be the first time Zachary Levi has appeared on Broadway. He made is New York stage debut in 2013, leading the cats of First Date, for which he won a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. He also provided the voice of smouldering anti-hero Flynn Rider in the hit 2010 Disney movie Tangled.
Laura Benanti has a formidable list of credits to her name, including 2008's Gypsy for which she won a Tony for Best Featured Actress. Jane Krakowski makes a triumphant return to Broadway after a Tony-winning performance in Nine, a Roundabout Theatre Company production. And last but not least, Gavin Creel, formerly of the smash-hit Tony-winning monster The Book of Mormon appears in a supporting role as the shop's lothario Kodaly.
