Sacrebleu!
The high-kicking Cole Porter musical Can-Can is back on Broadway! After a pre-Broadway run at The Paper Mill Playhouse this October, Can-Can will be hitting The Great White Way. The original book by Abe Burrows has been completely re-worked by two of the smartest brains working in television right now - The Americans showrunner Joel Fields and David Lee, co-creator of Frasier and Wings. With Lee directing, and Kate Baldwin leading the cast, Can-Can is set to be a major Broadway event, and is going to shine a big spotlight on one of Porter's most underappreciated works.
Featuring the songs C'est Magnifique and It's All Right With Me, this heady musical is set in the buoyant, arty Paris of the 1890s, and revolves around the leggy dance that scandalised the capital. After debuting on Broadway in 1953, Can-Can has undergone a number of successful revivals, including a 2004 production that featured Patti LuPone and Eli Wallach. It was also adapted into a 1960 movie musical, starring the luminous pairing of Shirley MacLaine and Frank Sinatra.
The Can-Canners
Leading the cast of this 2014 revival are Kate Baldwin and Jason Danieley, two relative musical theater veterans, whose roles here could seal their status' as bona-fide Broadway leads. Kate Baldwin was Tony nominated for her role in Finian's Rainbow in 2010 and has also starred in Big Fish and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Jason Danieley, who in the words of The New York Times' Ben Brantley possesses the "most exquisite tenor on Broadway", has trod the boards in The Full Monty and Candide. Also among the cast are the Tony nominated Michael Berresse (Kiss me, Kate) and Greg Hildreth (Cinderella).
What is Can-Can About?
Pistache is a Parisian cafe owner in the 1890s. The biggest draw at her establishment, the Bal du Paradis, is the high-kicking can-can. A local judge, Ariste Forestier, is so scandalized by this dance that he vows to shut down the Bal du Paris and visits this supposed den of debauchery himself to gather evidence. Whilst there however, he and Pistache fall for each other. Will this blossoming romance be enough to save the Bal du Paradis, or will Aristide carry through with his plans anyway?
