a brand new production
Rossini's final masterpiece is this epic tale of oppression and power and how one man takes on the might of the 13th Century Austrian occupation at great cost, both physical and emotional as Gesel, the Austrian Governor places Tell's own son in the firing line. With a rousing score that evokes the rumbling of storms and joyous merriment, this triumphant opera is truly a thing to behold as it returns to the Met after 80 long years!
Hit or miss: The story of Guillame Tell
Whilst the village prepares for the fun of the Shepard's festival, Guillame silently broods over the long held Austrian occupation, longing for liberty for his beloved Switzerland. Even in the face of the villager's joy, bitter feeling boils over when one of them kills some Austrian guards who were threatening his daughter. Guillame helps the man escape, setting in motion a series of events that will see him imprisoned by the Austrian governor and forced to take part in a contest that will stretch his loyalties to breaking point.
Controversial and yet poignant, Guillame Tell's absence has only fuelled audience's curiousity. Don't miss this completely new production, in collaboration with the Dutch National Opera!
