Returning to new York after 40 years!
What if Robin Hood took place in the formative years of this great nation? This American legend once again lands on the musical stage in 2016, helmed by Tony Award nominated director Alex Timbers (Peter And The Starcatcher, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) and based on a short story by Eudora Welty. Not staged for 40 years, this revival will be led by Steven Pasquale who starred in the hit 2015 musical Bridges of Madison County as the eponymous anti-hero of the title!
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Mississipi, 1700s: Jamie Lockhart seems to have life made, albeit living two very different lives unbeknownst to anybody else. A gentleman by day, and bandit by night, he frequently robs wealthy folk and has gained something of a reputation in these parts. However, nothing prepares "The Bandit" for a chance encounter in the woods one night with a wealthy plantation owner and his daughter, whom he saves from the vicious Harp Gang.
Smitten with Rosamund, and she with the robber, he makes plans to see her again by visiting their large mansion, under his daytime gentleman guise. However, Rosamund is less than enthused with Jamie, hankering instead for the dashing bandit. And to make things worse, her ugly and bitter stepmother Salome has designs on the robber herself, and must get rid of Rosalund in order to win him for herself.
Plotting the girl's murder, things get complicated when Salome is kidnapped by mistake, and Rosalund herself goes out in disguise as a simple common girl in search of the Bandit. With two women falling in love with the robber, Jamie is led on a merry chase through the woods in a comedic musical farce that wouldn't seem out of place in a Grimm fairy tale!
A taste of the lawless south!
Celebrated for its raucous comedic situations and for its southern Bluegrass inspired music, the show originally starred Kevin Kline as Jamie and Patti LuPone as Rosamund in its first inception in 1975 at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago.
