Why See The Tallest Tree In The Forest?

Paul Robeson Unmasked

One of 20th Century America's most dynamic figures is brought to life in Daniel Beaty's one man play The Tallest Tree in the Forest. The show, which runs at Brooklyn Academy of Music for a limited time this March, explores the life of Paul Robeson. Born in 1898, the singer conquered Broadway, The West End and Hollywood, and was one of the most visible supporters of the Civil Rights Movement. However, for much of his lifetime he would be dogged by accusations of being a communist sympathiser and was blacklisted during the McCarthy era.

Beaty's play blends together monolgue, video, photo and audio clips, as well as performances of Robeson's greatest hits (including of course Ol' Man River from Showboat) into a moving and powerful portrait. Beaty plays Robeson, while Tony and Emmy nominated Moises Kaufman directs.
