Off-Broadway Premiere
Regional favourite Daddy Long Legs at last comes to New York this year. Based on the 1912 novel by Jean Webster, Daddy Long Legs follows orphaned girl Jerusha Abbott as she's sent off to college by a mysterious benefactor.
Bowling over critics wherever its gone, Daddy Long Legs is a sweet, rags to riches tale, with subtly drawn themes of independence and self-discovery.This two-person musical boasts a book by multiple Tony Award winner John Caird (Les Miserables) and a score by Paul Gordon (Jane Eyre). Megan McGinnis, who originated the role of Jerusha back in 2009, stars alongside Paul Alexander Nolan, in his Off-Broadway debut.
What is Daddy Long Legs About?
In turn-of-the-century New England, a mysterious letter arrives for budding writer Jerusha Abbott, the oldest occupant of the John Grier Home for orphans. It contains an extraordinary proposal: the author of the letter, a benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous, will pay for Jerusha to go to college, on the one condition that she write him a letter once a month, to practise her writing skills.
So Jerusha heads off to school and every month she dutifully communicates her literary discoveries and her burgeoning sense of independence. The question is, will she ever discover the identity of her mysterious patron?
