The Critic's Have Their Say On Patriots!

Peter Morgan's (The Crown) new play Patriots officially opened on Broadway April 22.

The Crown's Peter Morgan and Enron direct Rupert Goold bring their 'lusciously livewire' (The Telegraph), Olivier Nominated play to Broadway. Patriots explores the fall of the Soviet Union and Russia's scramble for a leader, with Vladimir Putin hitching a ride to the top. Morgan's new play spotlights the corrupt and terrifying process, but did he manage to meet the expectations of the critics?

"Featuring brilliant performance by Michael Stuhlbarg as Russian-Jewish businessman Bros Berezovsky and Will Keen, repeating his Olivier Award-winning London performance, as Putin, Patriots is the sort of gripping real-life drama that only makes you want to learn more."
- New York Stage Review, Frank Scheck

Patriots is the sort of gripping real-life drama that only makes you want to learn more.

"To accomplish such a welcome feat, Peter Morgan - responsible, among other acclaimed works, for the Tony-nominated Frost/Nixon and The Crown - has done it again."
- New York Stage Review, David Finkle

"As a history lesson, Patriots is more than worthy. As a drama, well, it's a history lesson."

- Deadline

"Peter Morgan, like a moth to the flame of spirited stateliness, can be relied upon to provide dramatized look behind diplomatic doors in one of two modes: dignified (The Queen, The Audience, the first few seasons of The Crown) and haute-trashy (The Other Boleyn Girl, the last few seasons of The Crown). In Patriots, his latest play, now in performance at the Barrymore Theatre after a London run last year, he's drawn to the fire of narcissistic politicos but burned by the frost of his unclear intentions...The problem is, dramatically, he has nowhere to go, and neither do we."
- Theatrely

"Although Patriots is a dialogue-driven play, the highlight of this production is the creative stage design by Miriam Buether...But as flashy as Patriots' visual storytelling can get, it doesn't give the material the depth that Morgan is clearly striving for."

- Entertainment Weekly

It seems Patriots is a take it or leave it kind of play, but one thing that's for certain is the relevancy to today is slightly haunting.
