Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune Announces New Closing Date
July 9th, 2019
Starring Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon.
The Arin Arbus helmed revival of Terence McNally's Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune has announced that it will end its Broadway run early. The production stars six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald and Hollywood star Michael Shannon.
Originally scheduled to play through to August 25, Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune will now take its final bow at the Broadhurst Theater on July 25.
The production was well received by the critics when it opened on May 30, with Deadline saying that the production was "as poignant as ever, moving, sad, funny and, at a moment or two, the very definition of romantic."
What is Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune about?
Unlike most stage and screen romances, Frankie & Johnny begins with its title characters in bed together, after their first date ends. They've been to a movie, made idle chit chat and done the deed - it's hardly the stuff of an epic Mills and Boon bodice-ripper. The sarcastic and frumpy Frankie, a waitress at a greasy spoon, can't wait for Johnny, a new short order cook at the same joint, to leave so she can eat ice cream and watch television in peace. But Johnny has other ideas... Although she mocks him mercilessly, prolific meddler and constant talker Johnny professes his undying love for his recent amour, convinced she is his soulmate. As he wares away at her defences, they each bare their souls a little more as the tentative signs of love unfurl and a mismatch becomes a tender new relationship.
Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune is now playing at the Broadhurst Theater through to July 25.
