An American in Paris - 'S Wonderful!

Great night out for: This is a definite date night pick. It will leave you feeling inspired by love and hopeful of a better world.

Best bit: "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise", performed with such heart by Henri Baurel (Max Von Essen), Adam Hochberg (Brandon Uranowitz) and the Company. It's glitz, kicks, feel good music and everything you want from a Broadway musical.

Who would enjoy this show: Young and mature audiences will fall in love with An American In Paris.

Morning after effect: I may have looked at ticket prices to Paris... and caught myself singing "I've Got Beginners Luck" on the train.

Verdict We give it a five out of five stars

It's post World War II and Jerry Mulligan (Robert Fairchild), an American vet soldier, has decided to stay in Paris to pursue his passion for art and forget the hardship of war. He forms a friendship with fellow American composer, Adam Hochberg (Brandon Uranowitz) and wealthy Frenchman, Henri Baurel (Max Von Essen) who desperately wants to perform in American nightclubs. As the men search for Freedom it is with a bit of luck that Jerry finds himself creating the set design for a new ballet, starring Lise Dassin (Leanne Cope), a girl he saw on his first day in Paris. The three friends find themselves falling hopelessly in love with the breathtaking Lise, and we watch the love triangle play out through beautiful song and dance.

An American In Paris is rightly staged at the Palace Theatre, which is gorgeous in every detail. Despite the 1740 seats it feels intimate and homely. 'Playing at Palace' is a dream for many actors as her stage has seen such royalty as Bette Midler, Judy Garland, Harry Houdini, Ethel Barrymore, Shirley MacLaine, Jerry Lewis and Diana Ross. Robert Fairchild, Leanne Cope and the entire company have certainly proven their place on this stage.

Fairchild, Drama Desk winner for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, brings an incredible amount of energy to this role and is truly mesmerizing, Cope effortlessly exudes a classic ballerina grace throughout the show and their chemistry is exhilarating. The strength and talent of the company thrusts this production to its exceptional level of force.

The Academy Award winning film created in 1951 inspired this new musical, which includes songs by Gershwin "I Got Rhythm," "Liza," "'S Wonderful," "But Not for Me" and "Stairway to Paradise," to name a few classics, lead by conductor Todd Ellison. It is no small feat taking on a classic film and creating a new musical; however, Tony Award winner, Christopher Wheeldon makes his brilliant directorial debut alongside his amazing choreography.

From set to song and every note played and performed, An American In Paris is simply, "magnifique"!
