EIFMAN BALLET BRINGS TWO SPECTACULAR SHOWS TO NEW YORK

Ever since forming his own ballet ensemble in 1997 Boris Eifman has become synonymous with stunning choreography and masterful storytelling. Now in June 2017 he brings two of his most beloved shows Red Giselle and Tchaikovsky: The Mystery of Life back to the New York City Center.

Red Giselle is Eifman's tribute to the Russian ballerina Olga Spessivtseva who career spanned twenty-five years. It is the tale of a beautiful and talented ballet student who flees her puritan ballet school with a revolutionary. In Paris she becomes infatuated with her new partner who spurns her affections, causing a mental breakdown. Fascinated with the details of Spessivtseva's life Eifman considers this one of his most important artistic works.

Tchaikovsky: The Mystery of Life is Eifman's expression of the inner workings of one of his favourite composers. Like many great artists Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was haunted by depression despite his many successes. For Eifman this is what he hears in the tragedy of Tchaikovsky's music. This is no biography of Tchaikovsky but rather the essence of his music, the agony of his soul, which fuelled his work.
