Brighton Beach Memoirs

Brighton Beach Memoirs at Nederlander Theater

Why see Brighton Beach Memoirs?

Eugene Jerome and his extended family live in a crowded home in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn in 1937. As he daydreams about a baseball career, he must also cope with his family’s troubles, the opposite sex and his developing identity as a writer.

Simon's semi-autobiographical comedy concerns Depression-era teenager Eugene Jerome, who dreams of becoming a successful comedy writer, but whose fantasies are constantly punctured (and ultimately fueled) by his squabbling family.

Funny and heartwarming

We saw this show back in the 70's when we saw it the first time around. It was even funnier this time, since we are older and the perspective was different. No one can do what Neil Simon does--we wish he were still writing plays today. A minor criticism is that when the family is seated around the table, some of the wonderful, witty dialogue is lost when the characters have their back to the audience. SEE IT! ... Read more
