Metropolitan Opera: Cavalleria Rusticana / Pagliacci

April 29, 2015

The Met Opera presents a double bill of operas - Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni and Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo. This pair of exciting new productions created by Sir David McVicar will see esteemed tenor Marcelo Alvarez perform the lead role in both works. Arguably the most tragic of operatic works, the two operas are both set in Sicily, with Cavalleria Rusticana set in a rustic village square in 1900, whilst Pagliacci is brought forward to a 1940s truck stop in the same area. Jealousy and betrayal are the common denominators, along with the Sicilian setting.
