Jules Massenet's most popular opera comique Manon rounds off The Metropolitan Opera's 2014-15 season with coloratura soprano Diana Damrau in the titular role. The German singer overcame ill health during her studies to become world renowned for her astonishing technical skill, roof-raising powerhouse vocals and enchanting stage presence. Now she brings her unique talent to this rousing revival of the quintessential Belle Epoque Opera.
Set in late 19th century France, the story follows Manon, an impulsive and headstrong young woman who must face the consequences of choosing a luxurious life over true love. The role is often regarded as a showcase of a consummate leading lady in opera, with Manon's temperament moving swiftly from the sweet, hesitant tones of innocence to the feisty vocal theatrics of a woman at odds with society.
