Into the Woods at Laura Pels Theater

Why see Into the Woods?

Into the woods, where No One Is Alone

The Roundabout Theatre Company presents a very special production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's cautionary masterpiece. Stripping the show back to just 10 actors, and one piano, the flights of fancy of the the fairytale world will be rawer and more imaginatively played than ever before.

Much cherished, Into The Woods first appeared on Broadway in 1986 and has been revived many times since, becoming a part of the American musical theatre canon. It is currently being made into a movie by Disney, starring Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp.

What is Into the woods about?

A darkly witty show, Into the Woods invites us back into the universe created by the Grimm brothers and their stories, that we easily inhabited as children. With Cinderella, Jack (of beanstalk fame), Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and more making an appearance in the tale of a simple baker and his wife, who have been cursed by the Wicked Witch. As the plot unfolds, we see the consequences of a wish and how they can start off being everything you ever dreamed of, and evolve into the reason for your despair.

The moral of this story is that unfortunately, we all have to grow up sometime, and happily ever after is usually just a myth, told with typical Sondheim flair.

A must see. Everyone is superb, and the cow - the best. A fitting tribute, honor, recognition of Sondheim. ... Read more

The cow steals the show!

No lie. The human characters have been perfectly cast, all the way down to third spear-chucker on the left. Their performances of this beautiful piece will rend your heart. But Kennedy Kanagawa brings to life an ear-twitching, eye-blinking, milk-deficient, udderly adorable animal character without which the witch will fail in her quest. Who woulda thunk that this stand-up gal would be so crucial to the heart of the story? Do not miss this production - the seeing of it is a tale you will tell to your children. ... Read more
