Starring jake Gyllenhaal & Annaleigh ashford
Broadway's Hudson Theatre re-opens in spectacular fashion, with a staged concert version of Stephen Sondheim's glorious Sunday in the Park with George. Starring Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Constellations, Nightcrawler) and Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford (You Can't Take it With You), this production drew rapturous acclaim when it debuted at the New York City Center in 2016, and was extended by an additional four performances due to huge demand.
What is Sunday in the Park with George About?
One of Sondheim's lesser known gems, this show centers on the painter Georges Seurat as he creates his most famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Art and reality merge as the show delves into Seurat's obsessive imagination, while also offering up glimpses into the lives of the people he immortalized on his canvas. Boasting a book by James Lapine, it's a fascinating exploration of artistic inspiration set to some of Sondheim's most playful musical numbers, including 'Color and Light' and 'Finishing the Hat'.
Originally debuting on Broadway in 1984, the show won two Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This 2017 production is directed by Sarna Lapine, who is James Lapine's niece.
