Why See King Lear?

PlaysShakespeare

Flattery Gets You Nowhere

RSC director Gregory Doran and the Royal Shakespeare Company present the tragic story of raving madman King Lear and his three daughters. The unique Olivier Award-winning actor Sir Antony Sher takes to the throne in the role that some actors long to play.

What is King Lear About?

Elderly and eager to retire from the duties of monarchy, King Lear decides to divide his realm among his three daughters. Lear declares he will offer the largest share to the one who loves him the most, however, this only brings tragic consequences for all.

Did You Know

After the monarchy was restored in 1660, the play was often altered to have a more happy, non-tragic ending due to its dark depressing tones. But since the 19th century, the original version has been regarded as one of Shakespeare's supreme achievements.
