Two shrews tame each other in the Bolshoi's steamy take on Shakespeare

A daring new work for the Bolshoi

Jean-Christophe Maillot's energetic ballet for grown-ups to the music of Shostakovich heads to New York this summer, following a critically acclaimed run in at London's Royal Opera House last year. Adding a new lease of modernity to the classical Bolshoi repertoire, the witty and fast-paced choreography perfectly compliments the feisty nature of Shakespeare's sex comedy. Forced to marry a brash gold-digger so that her sweeter, younger sister may marry for love, the temperamental Katherina proves to be more than the boorish Petruchio bargained for. Some women were not meant for taming...

The story of a tempestuous young woman Katherina, and Petruchio, the man charged with becoming her husband by her increasingly exasperated father, the lively ballet encapsulates the struggle of finding a perfect balance between love and hate. As Petruchio enters a seemingly foolish bet to win Kat's hand, he comes to realize that his tried and tested techniques won't turn this lady. Not to be defeated he sets out to conquer her once and for all, surprising himself when he falls irretrievably in love with her at the same time.
