Lynyrd Skynyrd place one foot in their past and one in the present, with mostly positive results....
Ultimate Classic Rock, 2012 review
The South's favorite rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd has been together, in one form or another, since 1964. Their signature is the magical blend of not two but three guitars, which have weaved their way through iconic hits like Sweet Home Alabama, Simple Man and of course the ten minute epic Free Bird, which raised the bar to impossible heights for every guitar solo which was to follow. These Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Famers are still going strong, with 2012's Last of a Dyin' Breed continuing their southern-fried legacy. They will be heading out on a major US tour, playing dates from May to September.
The band have continued to perform and release albums despite the tragic 1977 plane crash that claimed the lives of Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines, followed by the recent death of foundng ex-member Bob Burns in April this year in a car accident. In 2012, they decided briefly to stop using the Confederate flag as part of their imagery to deter racist factions from associating themselves with the band; however protests from fans swayed them to reverse the decision as they felt it is part of their heritage. Their 14th album Last of a Dyin' Breed was released in the same year; as yet, there are no plans to release a new one, but watch this space.
