A washed-up actor is given a final shot at redemption, but his drinking threatens to derail things. Can his put-upon wife save the situation, or is she the cause of it?

The first major New York production in more than thirty years, The Country Girl is a classic backstage story. The title character, Georgie (Frances McDormand), is married to actor Frank Elgin (Morgan Freeman), once a great theatre star, now down on his luck. When Frank is offered a major role by hotshot director Bernie Dodd (Peter Gallagher), he has the chance to make a major comeback.

Academy Award-winner Morgan Freeman last appeared on Broadway in The Gospel at Colonus in 1988, and Academy Award-winner Frances McDormand last appeared on Broadway the same season in A Streetcar Named Desire. Peter Gallagher was last seen on Broadway in Noises Off in 2001 and was nominated for a Tony award for Long Day's Journey into Night.

Director Mike Nichols is an Academy Award-winner and eight-time Tony Award-winner, most recently for the smash hit musical Monty Python’s SPAMALOT. His most recent film is Charlie Wilson's War with Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julia Roberts.

Fantastic

Pretty similar to below review - I was wandering around Times Square and the names jumped out at me from the Theatre billboard. Couldn't believe my luck. Was fantastic seeing such legends on the stage. The set was excellent and the acting superb. I would highly recommend going to see this. I had an upper tier seat which was more than adequate but if you can stretch your finances to a floor seat, I imagine it would be well worth it. ... Read more

morgan and francis rocked

was in new york for 1st time early may, walking around broadway one evening and couldnt believe our luck when we saw morgan freeman and frances mc dormand billed for jacobs theatre! two of my favourite actors, how fantastic very enjoyable story with great performances, it was the highlight of my trip, looking forward to next time, dont know if another show could top that though. morgan and francis you were fab x ... Brilliant Acting

I had not read any reviews on this play but the actors names jumped out at me as a "must see" show. I pretty much enjoyed everything about this play; the story drew me in and kept me engaged throughout, and the acting was superb.
