It wouldn't be an exaggeration or an overstatement to say the set was magical; the sheer range of musicianship they displayed on those acoustic guitars was incredible.
Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela are back on tour with their newest album 9 Dead Alive, which marks a departure from their Latin-infused sound into rock and will be hitting the Beacon Theater in New York, NY, Ended 3 May 2014.
They first came to international attention when they traveled to Dublin in 2002 when Damien Rice noticed them busking and asked them to accompany him on tour. Their trademark rapid guitar play has become their trademark and has garnered a huge following worldwide, and even spawned a special DVD for their 11:11 concert in Japan.
The powerhouse of the duo comes from Gabriela's exquisitely fast strumming, described by many reviewers as hummingbird-like and provides the main bass sound for their music; on the other hand, Rodrigo uses these strong notes to cascade with higher chord combos and sis content to have her take the main applause. He has his own charm and flair however, such as playing slide with a Heineken bottle and managing to evoke Led Zeppelin at the same time!
Rapid guitar playing will always be this Mexican duo's hallmark - and for a very good reason. However, their new album 9 Dead Alive is their first collection of new material in five years - and is a huge change. Written, arranged, and co-produced by the pair, they have deliberately tried to forgo the Latin influence in their music in favor of an all-rock acoustic sound which takes them back to their pre-recording days of heavy metal.
Opening night: 1 May 2014
