Why See Cagney?

MusicalsOff Broadway Shows

off-broadway Premiere

James Cagney as you've never seen him before! This tap-happy musical follows the life of Hollywood's most famous tough guy, from his early days as a vaudeville song and dance man to movie superstardom. The original production played the York Theatre last year, where it was extended after its limited run sold out. The New York Times called it "rousing!", while the wonderful tap dance numbers were called "a dream come true" by Theatermania.

The multi-talented Robert Creighton co-wrote the show's original songs alongside Christopher McGovern, and reprises his role as Cagney. The rest of the original cast also join him, while Bill Castellino directs.

What is Cagney About?

Best known to modern audiences as the gangster from movies like Angels With Dirty Faces, Public Enemy and White Heat, James Cagney began his career in vaudeville. This show follows his story, from humble Manhattan beginnings, through his theatrical career to Hollywood stardom. It explores his relationships with his wife Billie, to whom he was married for 66 years, and with Studio boss Jack Warner, and their struggles over Cagney's 'tough guy' typecasting.

What we thought

CHARMING Entertaining gleeful

The energy on stage is exemplary with such heart and passion

James Cagney is surely playing a joke by reincarnating himself as Robert Creighton - the similarity is uncanny! Creighton slips into the shoes of this role with precision... tap shoes that is!
