Fado's Reigning King Carlos do Carmo
Capturing essence of suadade, or the Portuguese word for an infinite, spiritual longing and melancholy, Fado is the rich musical tradition of Portugal that dates back to the early 1800s. Its exquisitely sad songs, usually about the sea or the poor, tug at the heart strings with their mournful melodies and sorrowful sentiments. Fado maestro Carlos do Carmo, one of the genre's most famous artists brings the art form to the Town Hall New York stage for one night only this Spring.
With a career spanning over five decades, do Carmo's sonorous voice has defined fado. Unafraid to break boundaries, the Lisbon crooner opened the tradition to the other genres, including jazz and French music, and added an orchestra to the typical fado line-up of guitars. The living legend will be joined in concert by fellow revered performer Celeste Rodrigues, considered the doyenne of fado, for an evening of spell-binding, soul-stirring song including career-defining hits Canoas do Tejo, Lisboa Menina e Moca and Lagrimas de Orvalho.
