The 1980s hit movie, Tootsie, is getting a musical makeover in 2018/2019. Starting with a pre-Broadway engagement in Chicago the brand new musical will be heading to the bright lights of Broadway in the spring of 2019! Tony Nominee Santino Fontana (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Cinderella, Frozen) is set to star as Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels, and David Yazbek (The Band's Visit) will be penning the original score, Tootsie is getting a fresh 21st-century makeover.

The movie was a financial and critical success when it opened in 1982, it was the second most profitable movie of the year and received Ten Academy Award nominations. However, Jessica Lange was the only one to receive an Academy Award for the movie with Best Supporting Actress. It may not have swept up the Academy Awards but Tootsie, directed by Sydney Pollack, did go onto win three Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor (Dustin Hoffman), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Jessica Lange) and Best Motion Picture.

What is Tootsie about?

Michael Dorsey, a struggling actor with an impossible reputation, decides to turn the tide of fate. Taking drastic action, Dorsey decides to start dressing up as a woman and becomes Dorothy Michaels! Dorothy Michaels certainly has more luck than Dorsey and lands a job on a popular day time drama. As time progresses Dorsey starts to lose himself within Dorothy, with her 'independent woman' attitude Dorothy wins the hearts and gains popularity with women of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds who all want to be more like Dorothy! Of course the course of 'dress-up' never did run smooth and Dorsey/Dorothy soon find themselves in a bit of bother with an tricky and confusing love triangle...

Yes, it really is that good. A show about young rebels grabbing and shaping the future of an unformed country, "Hamilton" is making its own resonant history by changing the language of musicals.

What makes 'Travesties' so deeply engaging and hilarious and touching isn't its flashy erudition but its author's rapt fascination with the workings of the human mind and its enduring relationship with art
