For many, Jay-Z has been and always will be one of rap's all timers, but there's no denying in recent years he's ceded to the spotlight to the likes of Kendrick. Stories of marital problems and the fortunes of his streaming company Tidal have garnered more attention than his music. In 2017, that all changes, because new album 4:44 shows he can still bring it.
It's a sparsely produced collection of the rapper's strongest tracks in years, which delves headlong into themes of infidelity (many are seeing it as a response to wife Beyonce's Lemonade), race and Jay's own recent musical mis-steps. Standout tracks include the Nina Simone-sampling 'The Story of O.J.' and 'Caught Their Eyes', featuring a guest spot from Frank Ocean.
