TECHNICALLY EXCELLENT BUT ULTIMATELY A CON.
Harry Connick, Jr. stars as Henry Gondorff in Paper MIll Playhouse's "The Sting" and gives a heartfelt and excellent performance both vocally and as an actor. The supporting cast is generally excellent. The song and dance numbers, while quite enjoyable, rarely felt like they advanced or were even part of the plot. The enticing flow of the movie seemed constantly interrupted by musical interjection. Perhaps the movie's greatness would inevitably be diminished by the musical conversion process, but in this case perhaps less would have been better. SPOILER ALERT! I also am perplexed by the director's decision to have the assassin Salino show the gun right before being shot. It undermined the shock value of the scene. I was reminded for the controversy regarding the reissued version of ""Star Wars"; in the original Han Solo DID shoot first! By all means go see "The Sting" to hear Harry Connick, Jr. sing, play the piano, and act. Then rewatch the movie.

NEEDS WORK AND THEN ON TO BROADWAY
Needs to be tightened up. Love Harry Connick Jr. and Harrison Ghee. The second act is incredibly slow and long. Too many unnecessary numbers. Wish there was one memorable song. The women leads did nothing for me. Not sure if the songs, casting or script is responsible. Make changes and then I would love to see this land up on Broadway.

BIPOLAR ENERGY
First Act: high energy tap and a build for a great set up. (Intro to HCjr. was odd, inconsistent with the character.) Second Act: boring. No chemistry between the partners, no joy or charm in "the con." . No big, singable song. Female characters are underdeveloped and objectified.

GENERALLY DISAPPOINTING
The first act wasn't bad. The dancing was great but there are no memorable songs. The actor playing Hooker did a good job. But the 2nd act is awful. It has several songs that do nothing to advance the plot. It has some songs that just seem to exist to give HCJ a chance to play the piano. They set up the scene where Lonegan wants to place a 2nd test bet but never follow through. And then, after dragging their feet, suddenly comes the finale and the show barrels to the end.
