Why See The New Yorkers?

MusicalsOff Broadway Shows

It's time to hit the road with Cole Porter!

The Encores! Orchestra embark on their most ambitious reconstruction project yet, as they bring Cole Porter's partially lost musical The New Yorkers back to the stage this March. A social satire set in the Prohibition-era Thirties, it's a celebration of all things forbidden and enjoyed; from the underground speakeasies, gin runners, socialites mixing with hardened criminals. We follow the harebrained adventure of one such young lady as she is whisked away by a bootlegger! Featuring Porter's iconic, and at the same, controversial lament, Love For Sale.

Chock-full of jokes and references about drugs, sex and alchohol, this risque musical was a critical success on Broadway when it premiered in 1930, as it reflected the desires of many who were desperate to get hold of booze at any cost; however the radio censors banned Love From Sale from the air, in part causing the show to close only after 168 performances. It was last revived in 1996 as a full musical, with further concert-style shows taking place off-Broadway in 2009.
