The Gospel Musical With Hattitude
Adapted from the novel by Micheal Cunningham and Craig Marberry, Crowns is an uplifting gospel musical about the colorful relationship between the African-American woman and her church hat. Written by Golden Globe award-winning actress and playwright Regina Taylor, Crowns has become an international phenomenon, playing on stages throughout the world. Now the multi-talented creative returns to direct the 15th Anniversary revival of her seminal work at The McCarter Theatre Center.
Taylor's effervescent writing weaves together the stories of characters of different time periods and perspectives, as well as a winning Gospel music score, ultimately tied together by the journey of tough New York girl Yolanda. After the tragic shooting of her brother, she is sent to live with her grandmother in South Carolina. Mother Shaw introduces Yolanda to a circle of strong women, whose wisdom helps her to find herself.
